How fillers work.

Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule your skin produces naturally to hold moisture and volume. With age, we lose both HA and the fat and bone support beneath the skin, which leads to hollowing, flattening and folds. HA fillers replace that lost volume in precise areas.

Because HA fillers can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase, they are among the safest and most adjustable cosmetic treatments available.

Where fillers help.

  • Cheeks and midface volume
  • Under-eye hollows (tear troughs)
  • Lips: hydration, definition or subtle volume
  • Smile lines (nasolabial folds) and marionette lines
  • Chin and jawline definition
  • Temples
  • Hands

What to expect.

Dr. Burris begins by assessing your facial structure as a whole rather than focusing on a single line. Many fillers contain lidocaine for comfort, and a topical numbing cream can be applied beforehand. Treatment usually takes 30–45 minutes.

You'll see results right away. Some swelling or bruising is common for a few days, especially around the lips and under-eyes. Results generally last 6–18 months, depending on the product and the area. If you have an important event coming up, plan treatment at least two weeks ahead.

Frequently asked questions.

How long do fillers last?

Most HA fillers last 6–18 months. Lip filler is usually on the shorter end, while cheek and chin fillers tend to last longer.

Can filler be reversed?

Yes. Hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if you are unhappy with the result or if a complication occurs. This is one reason Dr. Burris favors HA fillers for many areas.

What's the difference between HA fillers and Sculptra?

HA fillers add volume immediately. Sculptra is a biostimulator that gradually stimulates your own collagen over several months. Many patients benefit from a combination of the two.

Is filler safe?

When it is performed by a physician with detailed knowledge of facial anatomy, filler has an excellent safety record. Dr. Burris is a board-certified dermatologist, and her approach is built around safety first.
